In this paper, we present an efficient and multiresolutional image representation scheme in which the input images are decomposed and represented as morphological pyramids. An input image is first decomposed into a morphological lowpass pyramid by using morphological filters. A morphological bandpass pyramid is then built by taking the difference between successive levels in the lowpass pyramid. Finally, a vector quantization is applied to each level of the morphological bandpass pyramid to achieve progressive transmission. Examples of images are presented to show the effectiveness of this coding system.
