To make cross-layer design tradeoffs spanning from application layer to physical layer, the interdependency of the control parameters at different layers should be quantitatively measured. A theoretical framework employing a non-additive measure based approach is proposed, which doesn’t need modeling and any prior knowledge of probability distribution of the transmission condition. It captures the specific contribution by different design parameters and their interactions on the objective function at each layer. In this way the design parameter subsets with the most significant effect on the design objectives are identified. A bottom-up mapping method is suggested to reflect the relation between the video quality at the application layer and the network condition at the MAC & PHY layers. Simulation results have shown that by dynamically adjusting the application layer parameters according to the bottom-up mapping table, the proposed application- MAC-physics cross layer design can provide higher video quality under a variety of channel conditions and traffic conditions.
